The lock miter joint can’t be beat for making columns, newels, posts and cabinet scribes, but the bit and stock have to be exactly centered together. Does the FitFinder Work with any other Lock Miter Bit?
Our Lock Miter Bit works with our FitFinder because we have a shelf milled into the bit to set the height from.
No other Lock Miter Bit has this feature, so they do not work as well with our FitFinder 1/2 Gauge.
Can I use the FITFINDER Lock Miter Bit on plywood?
You can use the FITFINDER Lock Miter bit in plywood, but you may need to adapt how you work just a bit.
As you know, plywood is made of layers with the grain running perpendicular between the ply’s. So every cut you make on it with any bit is cutting both with and across the grain. This means it will not cut as smoothly as with the grain, and there is likely to be some fuzz or tear-out in the cross grain sections.
Make a test cut on a scrap of the same plywood to see how it works. I would recommend a two-cut solution: Set the bit up as normal, then attach a cover strip of 1/8” or even 1/16” Masonite or laminate on your router table fence with a notch cut out for the bit.
Make your cuts with the strip in place, then remove it and re-run the parts as a cleanup pass. The extra light cut should be much easier and cleaner.
Finally, our Lock Miter bit is designed for stock 1/2” to 3/4” thick. 1/2” plywood is typically less than 1/2” thick, so the results with it are not great.
