The MATCHFIT Reversed Dovetail Bit cuts a shallow 14° groove in the top of your stock — same 3/8" depth, same setup gauge as the standard dovetail bit. Templates Can be made as thin as 3/8" (9.5mm) thick, clamp heads sit below the surface where your router and sander glide right over, and the same cut can be used to make sliding lids, trays, and drop-leaf supports. One simple bit, a many uses.
Henry Wang, Founder of MICROJIG, needed a better way to secure a tall table saw fence extension. Traditional clamps either got in the way of the cut or limited the height of the fence. By using a dovetail-shaped clamp head, he was able to clamp anywhere he routed a dovetail groove—along the entire fence without limiting it's height.

Cut a reversed dovetail groove in one part
A single pass routes the reversed dovetail groove — the standard dovetail profile, flipped upside down. MicroJig's patented Radius Flair at the top of the cutter leaves smooth cut edges with virtually no tear out, so the groove comes off the router clean and ready to fit.
The Grr-ripper+™ provides downward and inward pressure, keeping both sides of the cut parallel to the blade. This prevents the workpiece from straying from the rip fence, virtually eliminating kickback.

Cut a matching tongue in a second part
The same bit routes the mating profile on your second workpiece. Because both halves come from one cutter, the angles match automatically — the tongue seats in the groove with a consistent, repeatable fit, cut after cut.
Joint can be used for drawers and slides
Matched profiles nest and slide smoothly, giving you self-aligning, shop-made joinery — wooden drawer slides, sliding trays and lids, and other simple joints. Three cuts, two parts, one bits.

What does a "reverse" dovetail do that a regular one doesn't?
It cuts an inverted dovetail into the top of stock as thin as 3/8" (9.5mm). MATCHFIT clamp heads drop into that groove and sit below the surface — so you can hold thin templates and parts that a standard dovetail's 3/4" material requirement would rule out.
How thin can my templates be?
3/8" — half the thickness a standard dovetail bit needs. Thinner templates are easier to make and easier to handle, and the clamping holds whether you're pattern-routing top-down or flipped over with a hand router.
Won't the clamps get in the way of my router?
No — that's the whole trick. The clamp heads sit completely below the surface, so flush-trim bits, hand routers, and sanders glide right over the top. Nothing to steer around, nothing to hit.
Can I clamp work to my bench with it?
Yes. Cut a groove across the top of any board and you can clamp that board to a table, countertop, or sawhorse — no dovetail on the underside, no stepping up to thicker material. It holds for chiseling, routing, sanding, whatever the job is.
Does it work on acrylic or polycarbonate templates?
Yes — Acrylic and Polycarbonate will both work, even as thin as 3/8" (9.5mm). At 3/8", the bit will cut through, just use stopped cuts.
Is it CNC-friendly?
Very. Cut the template shape and its grooves in the same CNC session. No CNC? Set your router table fence and make each groove in one straight pass.
Router table or handheld?
Both. It cuts at the same 3/8" depth as the standard MATCHFIT dovetail bit, and the same setup gauge dials it in either way.
Can it do joinery, or just workholding?
Workholding is the day job — joinery is the bonus. Mate mirrored cuts with this bit to get sliding joints for drawers, trays and support slides. Three cuts, two parts, one bit.
Do I need MATCHFIT clamps?
The groove is cut to the MATCHFIT system's 14° geometry, so MATCHFIT dovetail clamps drop straight in — and everything it cuts plays with the dovetail grooves you're already routing.
